Carpentry

OVERVIEW

The NZ Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (L3) is part of the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Pre-apprenticeship Scheme. This course aims to give students broad pre-trade knowledge and skills, to work independently on a construction work site, and to demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours employers are looking for.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Basic work skills that employers want in the construction trades
  • Experience using a range of hand and power tools necessary in the construction trades 
  • An understanding of the health and safety requirements of the building industry
  • Increased knowledge of building codes and regulations
  • Plus lots of practical experience to grow your trade skills through:
    • Small carpentry projects
    • Building site projects

ENTRY CRITERIA

  • Men and Women aged 16-40
  • Maori/ Pasifika
  • Keen to work in the Carpentry or Construction Industries
  • Be capable to undertake this course
  • Be committed to attending every day and completing this programme
  • Interview before enrolment is confirmed

COURSE CONTENT

Using the Tūhoe Service Management Plan and its goals for housing, you will learn about and have opportunities to practice:

  • Health and safety in the construction industry
  • Onsite workplace hazard identification and management
  • The use of handtools, powertools and varied machinery used in the construction sector
  • Onsite work experience to apply your carpentry and construction skills
  • Different construction trades within the construction sector
  • Concrete works

This programme also introduces you to:

  • Career planning, including setting goals and how to acheive them
  • Strategies to deal with employment related matters
  • Tūhoe priorities identified by ngā Taraipara for future building and construction
  • Oranga in the home and sustainable housing options

This programme also introduces you to your cultural identity through pepeha, karakia and waiata
