Tohu Paetahi o Te Reo Māori

Ko te Tohu Paetahi ō te Reo he tohu ahurei, he tohu ritenga kore. E toru mano hāora ka noho koe ki te kōrero, tuhituhi hoki i roto i te reo Māori mō ngā tau e toru ā, mā konei koe e ahei ai ki te whakapakari i āu pūkenga tāia pukapuka, hopu kōrero, rangahau me te ako.

Ka kawea te tohu paetahi nei mō ngā tau e toru i roto i te reo Māori anake. Ko te kaupapa matua ō tēnei tohu ko te reo Māori, ka mutu, e hāngai pū ana ngā kaupapa ako katoa ki ngā āhuatanga ō te reo Māori ā, ko ēnei e whai ake nei he tino kaupapa ako anō mō te tohu arā; kōrero ā-tuhi, ā-waha me te mātauranga wetereo; rangahau me te waihanga kōrero auaha.

This 3 year undergraduate degree is entirely in te reo Māori. The major in this degree is te reo Māori and the other subjects studied are all other aspects of the Māori language; written and oral literature and linguistics; research and creative compositions also figure as important components of the degree.

 

Course Papers

Year One
Te Reo Māori Reo 103 & 104 (full time only)
These papers are Level 5 papers and are an intensive immersion te reo in order to facilitate your fluency and give you the ability to apply the language across a broad range of informal and formal situations. You will be  competent in interpreting in a range of a situations and using te reo Māori in informal and formal conversational modes.The emphasis will be on the practical application of te reo so that you will be able to meet the demands of Year 2 and Year 3 papers where te reo will be the medium of instruction All assignments will be expected to be written or delivered in te reo.

These papers are pre-requisites for students to graduate to the 200 level papers.

Entry Criteria

Students must be fluent or native speakers of te reo Māori who can show that they are able to cope with the academic requirements of tertiary level as in the following:

  • School leavers must be 17 years or older, have gained NCEA Te Reo Māori at Level 3
  • Mature students must have competency in te reo and have completed either:- a) Te Matanui Undergraduate Diploma or b) an equivalent tertiary qualification with a te reo component at  Level 4 or greater
  • All prospective students will be interviewed.

Enrolment Details

Qualification: Bachelor of Te Reo Māori
Delivery: 10 Wananga; 3 consecutive days per month; weekly tutorials, online learning 2012 Wananga Dates
*Monthly learning hours include wānanga, workplace project, supervised tutorial, online learning and field trips.  A total of 90 hours learning per month.

NB: Students will need to have access to a computer and the internet.
Part time students are welcome to enrol in years 2 & 3 and the 203 te reo paper is particularly useful for people interested in professional development.
