Te Reo Maori

maori2.jpeg

With the first breath of life comes the language and with the language comes the culture of the people.

Language is the medium by which a culture is transmitted. It not only encapsulates the customs and usages of the culture, it also carries the spirit of the people to whom it belongs. The very way in which the people organise their grammar and the words they use in order to talk about the things that interest them, reflects their unique world view. Language is the only reliable link with a people’s past. When a people lose their language, their continuity with the past is lost and thereby a major part of their very identity as a people.

Te Pū Wānanga o Anamata is committed to maintaining and promoting this uniquely Māori world view by providing educational opportunities which have Te Reo as their core focus. In the Māori world view where the future is seen in terms of the past, Anamata is looking to cherish this taonga, Te Reo, and use its past strength to nurture the speakers of the future. Te Pū Wānanga o Anamatas' intention is to make sure the language is kept safe, and also to encourage its growth and development as the living breathing essence of Māori life that it once was.
