Suicide Intervention and Prevention

Suicide is not a disease that can be cured. Rather, it is a complex problem for which there is no one cause or cure. Instead there are a range of biological, cultural, economic, social and psychological influencing factors.

Most suicides, however, can be prevented.

Course Papers

This course will provide you with or be able to:
• The necessary skills and tools to work effectively with suicide intervention in whanau;
• Recognize and respond to suicide risk factors,
• Self awareness and self care when working with whanau,
• Planning and development skills to implement strategies for dealing with suicide in whanau,
• Ability to apply concepts and strategies of hauora when working with whanau affected by suicide and abuse issues,
• Demonstrate safe and effective practice.
 

Entry Criteria 

This course is for practitioners who already have a social service qualification or have significant experience working in the social service and health sectors.  Applicants must be 25 years + and have been working with violence or in a  related field for at least two years and

  • provide evidence from a current supervisor
  • provide a brief professional profile
  • have a current first aid certificate
