Some counsellors work with clients who come with a wide range of problems or issues, others specialise in one or two areas.
Specialisations include: substance abuse, violence and abuse, family therapy, rehabilitation, people with disabilities, mental health, grief, and personal problems.
Self employed counsellors may contract for private work through ACC, MSD, Family Court on an annual basis. Currently, there is a severe shortage of well-qualified Mâori Counsellors.
Anamata offers the NZQA National Diploma of Counselling Level 6 as a basic professional qualification for those people seeking work, in the social services field, as a Counsellor. The course provides recognition of a level of competence, knowledge and skills required for counselling at a professional level in a wide range of settings, in statutory and voluntary agencies and organisations.
This course provides a bi-cultural approach and is also suitable for applicants who work in schools, church and community agencies, the health sector or private practice; particularly those aiming at upgrading their qualifications.
This course has been designed to suit people who work and study at the same time. Prior or current learning can be formally recognised.
