According to tradition, Te Maunga (the Mountain) and Hine-pūkohu-rangi (the Mist Maiden) – brought forth the people known as Ngāi Tūhoe.

Te Pū Wānanga o Anamata evolved from a perceived need to strengthen te reo o Tūhoe and Tūhoetanga. By providing a tertiary institution underpinned by these two essential elements, the leaders of Anamata seek to provide Tūhoe with authentic courses.

The generic Māori courses offered in the public sector often do not address real Māori issues. Our courses are aligned to Tūhoe educational, social and health initiatives. By underpinning our courses with Tūhoetanga we ensure that graduates are able to integrate into the communities they are planning to serve.
