Te Pū Wānanga oAnamata has yet again, had its research programme recognised by the Tertiary Education Commission in the 2007 PBRF assessment of New Zealand tertiary institutes. Of 31 institutes submitting profiles in 2006 to be assessed on research performance, Anamata gained 11th place.  The first eight were the universities closely followed by one Institute of Technology and another fellow PTE.

As a Māori tertiary institute, this was indeed an endorsement of the quality of research in Iwi and Maori issues undertaken by Anamata who is funded on the basis of their performance.

The Performance Based Research Fund has three elements of judgement:

* reward and encourage the quality of researchers—60 percent of the fund
